Calculating UK Car Import Taxes

The Big Change

HMRC no longer calculates import taxes for private individuals.

You’ll need a Customs Agent to handle the paperwork and calculate those pesky import duties and VAT. They’ll charge a fee, but they’ll also save you a headache.

We can help you take the hassle out of importing your car into the UK.

Relief Options

Before rushing to the agent, check if you qualify for relief

If you previously owned the vehicle in the UK, you can claim Returned Goods Relief (RGR), as long as the vehicle was not purchased brand new under a VAT Free Export Scheme. Under this relief there would be no import Duty or VAT to be paid. The 3 year return rule does not apply to private individuals.

Further Information on RGR can be found by clicking here

Certificate of Origin

Proof of Origin

UK laws and regulations have recently changed, and to reduce the amount of import duty charged, you must now provide acceptable proof of origin, such as a statement of origin from the supplier. As of January 2026, a certificate of conformity no longer counts as proof of origin, as it only confirms product compliance and does not prove where the goods were manufactured, meaning it cannot be used to claim reduced or preferential duty rates.

Transfer of Residence Relief (TOR)

If you have moved to the UK for 12 months or more and you have owned and used the vehicle for at least 6 months in your name before coming to the UK, you may be entitled to claim Transfer of Residence Relief (TOR). There would be no import Duty or VAT required to be paid if the relief is granted. This relief can also be claimed for any personal and household items you bring with you to the UK.
